ABOUT NIVATI BEACH
I took a road trip to Bhogave beach. En route to Bhogave, I travelled to Kasheli beach, another serene and quiet seashore. You can read the Kasheli beach guide for details. While exploring the places around Bhogave beach, I dropped by Nivati beach, a short drive away.
Nivati beach is a small shoreline between two cliffs which gets its name from the adjacent Nivati village, a small fishing community with closely built houses.
If you search on Google Maps, there are two places named Nivati beach. The long seashore is divided into two by a cliff. You can walk from one beach to the other. I visited the smaller one known for the renowned Golden Rocks.
Nivati beach is a pristine seashore. Locals and a few tourists stop by the beach. Numerous tourists travelling to Malvan or Tarkarli visit Nivati beach by boat to see the Golden Rocks. Nivati beach is also known for the Nivati fort, a few metres away.
The Golden Rocks Nivati beach, a white sand beach, is bordered by cliffs on two sides, the Arabian sea on one side and a small pond-like water body on the fourth side. You have to wade through knee-deep water to get to the beach.
*NOTE:- The water level rises and falls with the tide. Cross where the water is shallow.
Nivati beach is an untouched shoreline. Travel here to enjoy a quiet and peaceful time at the beach.
HOW TO REACH NIVATI BEACH?
Travelling by road is the best way to explore Konkan. There are two routes to Nivati beach from Pune- one via Mahabaleshwar and the other via Satara.
Pune – Satara – Nivati route is 400 km long and takes 8-9 hours. This route follows the NH48, NH66 and state highways. The road via Mahabaleshwar is 468 km and takes 13-14 hours. A large section of the road is hilly and takes longer.
I wanted to stop by Kasheli beach, so I travelled by a bit of both route. I travelled from Pune to Ratnagiri via Satara. The following day I travelled from Ratnagiri to Bhogave, a few kilometres from Nivati beach. This route is 489 km and takes 11 hours.
Pune – Satara – Ratnagiri – Kasheli beach – Bhogave – Nivati beach.
Aside from driving, trains and buses are other ways to reach Nivati beach. Ride the bus or catch a train from Pune to Kudal or Kankawali. From here, hire an auto or take the MSRTC buses to Nivati. You can also take the plane to Goa’s Dabolim airport and self-drive or take a taxi, bus or train to Nivati.
PLACES TO VISIT NEAR NIVATI BEACH
Now you know how to get to Nivati beach. Aside from this peaceful beach, Nivati village is known for the Nivati Fort, the Golden Rocks and Vengurla Nivati lighthouse.
The Nivati fort, beach and Golden Rocks are a few minutes from each other. But the Vengurla Nivati lighthouse is deep in the sea, an hour’s boat ride from the coast.
NIVATI FORT
Built by Shivaji Maharaj, Nivati Fort was essential in controlling traffic between Karli Creek and Vengurla. Once upon a time, it was a grand structure. Now only a few walls remain.
Nivati Fort is on a cliff overlooking the Bhogave and Nivati beaches. The hilltop is all tall grass and thorny bushes. But it presents appealing scenes of Bhogave and Nivati beaches. Also, Nivati Fort is a great place to watch the sunset.
GOLDEN ROCKS
A cliff divides Nivati beach into two- the main beach and the smaller one. The hill is of yellow rocks that appear golden. These rocks appear golden when seen at a particular time. The Golden Rocks are visible from the smaller shore.
Boats from Devbag, Malvan or Tarkarli don’t dock at Nivati beach. Visitors are shown Golden Rocks and Nivati Beach from the sea. So, those who wish to spend time at the Golden Rocks Nivati beach should come by road.
VENGURLA NIVATI LIGHTHOUSE
Popularly it is known as Vengurla Rocks. It is an archipelago of 20 huge rocks. Upon these rocks are two lighthouses- the old one on Burnt island and the new one.
In the 1800s British built a lighthouse, but the equipment for signalling ships didn’t reach the island on time. So, they lit a fire. Since then, the island came to be known as Burnt island.
The new lighthouse was built 90 years ago by John Oswald in 1931. The old lighthouse is now in ruins. But the new structure is still in use.
The Vengurla Nivati lighthouse is a beautiful sight and a must-visit. The boat ride to the rocks is adventurous and thrilling.
Read my Vengurla Nivati lighthouse guide for elaborate details.
WHERE TO STAY?
Nivati village is a small fishing community. Visitors come to Nivati beach on a day trip from Malvan or Tarkarli, so there aren’t many accommodation choices.
Malvan and Tarkarli are tourist hotspots having a range of hotels and homestays. If you want to avoid crowds, Bhogwe village is the best choice. It is untouched by tourists and has a clean and quiet Bhogave beach.
I stayed at Ocean’s Delight in Bhogwe. The hotel is right on the beach. It is relatively new, but they offer good service, tasty food, stunning views and cosy rooms.
You can read my hotel Ocean Delight’s review.
TRAVEL TIPS
- Fuel up your vehicles before travelling to Nivati beach. The nearest petrol pump is 10 km away in Parule, and the other is 20 km away in Malvan.
- Nivati beach is a secluded beach. There are no restaurants or stalls nearby. So carry ample water and food.
- There is no parking facility. There is a small village square where you can park after asking the locals. There isn’t sufficient space for the bus arriving at noon to turn. So parking is often denied.
- If you plan to visit the lighthouse, catch a boat from Bhogave beach. It will take less time than travelling from Malvan or Tarkarli. Also, there are fewer chances of seasickness.
- Winter and summer are the best times to visit Nivati beach. November to February is winter. The temperature is moderate and cool. From March to May, the temperature rises drastically and is very hot. June to October is the monsoon season. The sea is rough and dangerous. And water sports and other activities are unavailable during this time.
